Why Volunteering Matters: How Small Acts Create Big Community

Volunteering is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to give back to the community. At the Indian American Cultural Association (IACA), we believe that small acts of kindness can lead to meaningful change—and one of the best examples of this is volunteering through food packing initiatives.

One of the impactful ways our volunteers serve is by participating in food packing sessions at Feed My Starving Children. During these sessions, our volunteers come together to pack specially designed meal kits containing rice, soy, vegetables, and essential vitamins. These meals are then shipped to communities in need around the globe. What makes the experience so special is the spirit of teamwork—people of all ages working side by side with a shared goal of helping others.

For many of our volunteers, especially youth, this experience becomes more than just community service. It becomes a powerful lesson in compassion, gratitude, and global responsibility. It helps them understand that even a few hours spent helping others can make a lasting difference in someone’s life.

Food packing events also bring families and community members together. Parents, children, and friends work as a team, strengthening bonds while contributing to a noble cause. These moments not only help feed families in need but also build a stronger and more caring community here at home.

At IACA, we are proud to encourage our volunteers—especially our youth—to participate in initiatives like these. Through volunteering, we nurture empathy, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to service.

Highlights from My Last Food Packing Session With IACA, May 2024

Volunteering at Feed My Starving Children at FMSC, Aurora, IL was a truly meaningful experience for me alongwith my friends.

We worked together in a team on different stations, we had to measure ingredients and pack meal bags as we were instructed, it really felt a strong sense of purpose and meanings.

It was inspiring to realize that just a few hours of effort could help provide hundreds of meals to children and families facing hunger around the world. The experience not only highlighted the importance of teamwork but also left a lasting reminder of how small acts of service can make a big difference.

This was really a fun group with my friends and Team IACA. So many of many friends come to pack food regularly at this location which is so convenient for most of us. I cannot wait to attend another food packing session soon.

I got an opportunity to go as an IACA Volunteer to prepare a meal for a homeless shelter, Hesed House, based in Aurora, IL. This was my first time volunteering for a homeless shelter. As we gathered in the kitchen, we went through their facility, people waiting in the dining hall for the dinner to be served. We chopped salads, fruits and baked pizza and prepared the trays to be taken out in the hallway. There was a shared feeling of purpose. Everyone knew that the food being prepared would bring comfort to someone going through a difficult time.

When the meals were delivered to the shelter, the smiles and gratitude from the people receiving them made every effort worthwhile. It was a powerful reminder that sometimes the smallest gestures—like a warm, -cooked meal—can bring hope, dignity, and kindness to someone’s day. The experience left me with a lasting sense of compassion. It was only my couple of hours of time, but it brought joy on so many faces. It was both humbling and deeply rewarding for me that i will cherish for the time to come.
